Two Days at Sea

December 23 and 24

For some reason I was unable to send a message using the Mindspring program through Agent which is the program I usually use to send emails to friends and family. So I sent a couple of the messages through AOL

Bob thinks this ship really rides funny. It makes funny noises. (Funny as in strange, not funny as in ha-ha)

December 23rd

We went up to breakfast about 8 in the dining room (we have not seen the buffet yet). We sat at a table with two other couples. We didn't get their names but one was a black couple from Las Vegas and they have been on the ship since it left Barcelona and are going to stay on the ship to go through the canal and get off in LA. She said she had 59 cruises on Princess. Both of us had half grapefuit and I had Eggs Benedict

without the Canadian bacon and also a chocolate chip muffin. Bob just had scrambled eggs and bacon. They did give me cranberry juice although it was not on the menu.

At 10 we went up for the presentation on the first three islands.

The lecturer (Dr. Dean Papavassiliou) was, as you might expect from his name, Greek. His presentation was disjointed and his accent was hard to understand, plus he mixed up the excursions. He gave the Iles de Saintes excursions in St. Barts, and he gave the Martinique excursions in Iles de Saintes. He did OK with Antigua.

At 11 we went up for Trivia and paired with a couple from Michigan (Steve and Carrie) and one from NH (Ann and Don). We did pretty well - got 19 out of 25. They had the last 5 questions as photos of movies and we missed the last one which was "The Matrix". We also missed a trick question about how many eyes does a vampire bat have (2), and the name of the movie that Steven Spielberg made from Peter Pan (Hook). The first question was what do they call the art of arranging dance movement and everybody said "choreography" but I thought it was terpsichorogrophy. But I thought everyone would say Choreography so we put that, and it was correct.

At lunch we sat with someone who was pretty much blind and her husband had COPD, and another couple who was going to be on the Royal Princess after this cruise and she had 8 pairs of shoes with her in her luggage. I had a

forgetting completely how lame Princess does Brunswick stew. It was even more lame than the Star Princess as the chicken was grey. Bob had a

for dessert (it was better on the Star Princess) and Bob had the

which was to have almonds and did not. Although one of the other ladies complained about the lack of nuts and they brought her a whole cup full of nuts.

Bob said he went up to the laundry room and it is more trouble than it is worth. It need tokens and the token machine will take your money and not give you the tokens so you have to come down to the desk to get the tokens.

We met the lady in the handicapped room next to ours in the hall. She had dropped the little tag that you put on your door to say do not disturb and couldn't get it from her chair. Bob picked it up for her.

We took a nap, and then we met the same people for Trivia again at 4. We missed 3 questions - the name of the Wii game where you stand like musical statues (Just Dance), the name of the most downloaded Beetles song in 2010 (Here Comes the Sun) and the trick question about how a male cricket chirps which we all thought was legs, but turns out to be wings. There were four groups with the same score so he asked us to guess his age, and he was 28 and we put 29, so we were out of it. Then he asked them the height of the Leaning Tower of Pisa in feet, and the one closest (165 - it was 200+ feet) won. The prizes were coasters so it wasn't a great loss and we had a good time.

Then we had to rush back to the room to get dressed for formal night. Our table companions

I had the

and I really could not taste any crab, although it was good. Bob had the shrimp cocktail (as usual) and then he asked for the chilled sweet pea soup. The others said they like hot pea soup but did not know how they would like it cold. But Bob said that when it came it was hot and not cold. Then Bob had the everyday salmon, and I had the

I should have had the tiger shrimp which I liked on the Star Princess, but the lamb was very good and had nice potatoes and green beans and a tomato with it. The MDR is called the Club Restaurant, and the Club part is before you get to the regular restaurant and is a kind of My TIme Dining area for Club class. When we leave and go through that area I see pans which show that they have had cherries jubilee or spaghetti cooked in them.

For dessert Bob had the make your own sundae, and I had
Chocolate Journeys - chocolate cake with raspberry creme brulee and bittersweet chocolate mousse.

Actually it was mostly mousse with an inner core of raspberry. I had this on the Star Princess but there wasn't any raspberry in it but there was more cake to it.

I was disappointed that Bob did not go to the show. We both came back to the room.

December 24th

I am again able to use the Mindspring email program, although at present the internet says it is down. Today was a wash. We went up to breakfast and the menu had

which I usually like, but the eggs were kind of soupy - like soft boiled. I had to borrow Bob's spoon to eat them - a fork would not cut it. I also had some fruit bread and a half grapefruit. Bob had hot chocolate, and oatmeal with brown sugar and then scrambled eggs and bacon - his usual.

Then I took the laptop up to the computer guy and he figured out how to get this program to get email. He also put AOL back on my phone so I can access those emails on the phone now as I have not been able to do since June when my granddaughter fixed the phone so that I could send emails on mindspring.

But we missed the morning trivia. We went to lunch (we didn't do the pub lunch which we probably should have done) and there were three other couples at the table with us. One of them must be the youngest people on board except for a baby and a boy who looks to be about 4 (no children's club on this ship). They were married in 2014 and live in Seattle. There was a lady who was legally blind and her husband, and two other couples. We both had the

and mostly ate the lettuce and tomatoes which I found I was craving. Bob had

This was a kind of blueberry jelly roll with a dollop of blueberry syrup with whole blueberries in it on the side. We talked so long that we completely missed the Cruise Critics meeting which was up in the steakhouse where the pub lunch had been.

Then Bob forgot that trivia was at 3:45 instead of 4:00 and so we got there late. I was able to tell them what the name was of a male crab (Jimmy), and I sort of knew that the other name for the Bank of England had Threadneedle Street in it (The Old Lady of Threadneedle Street). I couldn't remember what fugu was although as soon as I heard it I remembered.

At dinner I had

which was a clear broth with some tiny shrimp and slivers of carrot and some other squares of some meat. Then I had Short ribs

which were good. Bob had shrimp cocktail as usual, coconut soup, and his usual salmon. He had his usual Sundae for dessert

and I had what was billed as

The crisp was like peanut brittle, only almond. The 'torte' was a piece of cake with two chocolate cake layers and in the middle was a chocolate nut ice cream and there was chocolate frosting on the top.

St Barts is always a tender port. When we were here before, we rented a car at the airport but since it was Christmas, I was not sure the car rental would be open, and I thought I might have a problem getting to the airport to pick up a car. Plus we had a lot of trouble driving in St. Barts due to the narrow twisty roads.

The alternative would be a taxi. But I thought (correctly) that I might have trouble getting a taxi. All the tours on St. Barts were canceled and I suspect it was because none of the drivers wanted to work on Christmas. I had contacted a taxi driver named Laurent who said he spoke good English but he had another job to do on the 25th. I asked if we could just have a couple of hours in the morning, and he said that he needed to be at the other job at 11:30 but he would come at 9:30. So we felt that we had to get on the first tender to have the maximum time with him. I realized that I did not know his name, so I looked it up and found it and his phone number and what kind of car he had (a Mercedes).

We thought that we should eat in the buffet because the service is kind of leisurely in the dining room. But the buffet on this ship is tiny and although the staff will bring you something to drink, they never offer to help me with my plate. You can get omelets made for you, but other than that, there's scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, pastries, cold meats, cold cereal and some fruit and not much else. I did see bread pudding as I was leaving (and never saw it up there again). But the bacon was tough and chewy and I didn't like the sausage.

We got to the Casino Bar where they were giving out tender tickets before 9 - we were to anchor at 9 (and we did) and they were going to start giving out tender tickets at 9:15. Although usually the tours get the tickets first, all the tours for St. Barts had been cancelled. The guy who was giving out the tickets gave those of us who were there in advance the tickets first and we got #19 and 20. We went down to deck 3 and Bob folded up the scooter and I went down 3 steps to the tender docking area and got on the tender. They put the scooter on last.

We got off just about 9:30 and unfolded the scooter and I went down to the end of the taxi rank where there was a Mercedes

and said to the man standing there "Are you our taxi driver?" And he said maybe he was. It turned out that I had neglected to tell him my name or how he might recognize us, although I had told him about the scooter.

He was very nice and very helpful and took us to the other four cemeteries (In addition to the beaches, the cemeteries are one of the sights of St Barts) which we had not been able to visit on our last trip. The first three were down in an industrial area. I got out and took the scooter in to see the

The oldest Swedish cemetery was in Gustavia north west of the hospital. It was used between 1785 and 1799 and later moved here to the beach in anse de Public. The rationale behind the move was a Swedish law stipulating that cemeteries should be placed outside urban areas. It was also much easier to dig graves in the sand rather than in the gravel found at the old cemetery. The new location was, however, more exposed to wind and water. Governor Johan Norderling's report written after the hurricane in 1819 which states that not even the dead got spared when violent waves dug up and destroyed the coffins. The new cemetery fell to ruins and was not renovated until the 1970's. The large monument in the center of the cemetery was raised after the renovation.

The next place we went was Cimetière Saint-Jean which was opposite the airport.

We took a sampling of photos here - about 80. Then we wanted to go to Cimetière Lorient Haut (we had done Cimetière Lorient Bas when we were here before), but it was briefly raining,

so he drove us through the marine sanctuary area to Cul de Sac Bay (which I think is a funny name).

By then it stopped raining so we went back to

It was too sandy for the scooter and we were under a time constraint so Bob just took about 70 photos. We also got to see two planes land at the airport.

He took us up by the lighthouse, but it was closed due to hurricane damage, and he said we could look at the fort, but it was the police station, so if I wanted to go in, I'd have to do something bad.

He said hurricane Irma destroyed about 80% of the island - he lost his house and everything he owned. The island was only back in operation for about 3 months. His afternoon job was for a family that came at Xmas every year and since cabs are so hard to find at that time of year, he worked for them every day from 11:30 to after dinner for that week.

We got back to the port a little before 11:30 and I paid him in euros on a credit card machine. It was 150 euros for the tour, but this is an expensive place. A coke was 10 euros according to the people at our table. Bob was really really happy not to have to drive on the very narrow twisty roads.

We just missed a tender so we sat and waited and then when the tender came Bob folded up the scooter and went to stand in line, but my back started to hurt so I sat on the railing. It was stainless steel and was quite sturdy. But they didn't want me there so they found me a chair and then I was first on the tender and sat by the window so I could take photos of all the big fancy yachts - reportedly some belonging to the Russian mafia.

At least two of them had their own helicopters (I didn't get a photo of them) and a lot of them had boat garages.

There was a very fat man getting onto the tender and it took 3 or four people to get him down each of the steps and onto the tender. But I did not see any mobility device for him. I didn't see him get off - I decided to wait until after everyone else had gotten off to get off. I hauled myself up the steps and Bob commented that it was like when I went up the steps at home.

We were in time for lunch and we had a good lunch. I had the matzo ball soup (which was a bit salty) and potato latkes,

and Bob had a triple decker chicken club sandwich. We were both hungry not having had much breakfast. We had ice cream for dessert.

I got to work on the photos, and then we went up for trivia. We usually get 10 or 11 and some group on the other side of the room gets 15. We would have gotten one more if they had taken my answer for the name of the straits between the North and South islands of New Zealand. I said they were the Cook Straits, but I didn't know how I knew that so I wasn't positive and they said Wellington and they were wrong.

They had the traditional turkey dinner at night, and Bob ordered it, but he was having a problem swallowing so he did not eat any of it and left early. I had the

I usually leave my scooter along the mirror by the Club Dining room section and one of the waiters brings it up to hurry us along so they can get the table turned for the late seating. We talk a lot at our table and the service is slow.

When we got back to the room, we each had a little Christmas stocking filled with a few chocolates.
